Glycolic acid is the smallest α-hydroxy acid (AHA). This colorless, odorless, and hygroscopic crystalline solid is highly soluble in water. A water solution form is also available. Glycolic acid is slightly stronger than acetic acid due to the electron-withdrawing power of the terminal hydroxyl group. The carboxylate group can coordinate to metal ions forming coordination complexes. Of particular note are the complexes with Pb2+ and Cu2+ which are significantly stronger than complexes with other carboxylic acids.
This indicates that the hydroxyl group is involved in complex formation, possibly with the loss of its proton.
Glycolic acid is used as dyeing and tanning preparations in the textile industry.
Used as flavoring agents and preservatives in food processing;
Used as a skin care agent in the pharmaceutical industry;
Glycolic acid is also used in adhesives and plastics;
Glycolic acid is commonly used in emulsion polymers, solvents, and ink and paint additives to improve product flow properties and increase luster;
Glycolic acid used to increase the friction coefficient of tile floor surface treatment products;
Glycolic acid is an active ingredient in household cleaning solution.
Under proper storage conditions, the shelf life is 36 months
